Grizzly True Crime – When Brutal Crimes Turn Into Snark and Entertainment

Gisela K, known for her YouTube channel Grizzly True Crime, has grown quite popular over the years, even appearing multiple times on Court TV. I discovered "Grizzly" while researching the brutal 2024 murder of 13-year-old Madeline Soto in Florida. I won’t delve too deeply into that case since the verdict has not yet been reached, but much of the information that surfaced was regularly posted on Gisela’s channel.

She is skilled at delivering clear and concise information, which I appreciate. Like most large YouTubers, she has a dedicated fanbase who call themselves "Grizzlys"—a name she coined and they now embrace. This is the sad reality of YouTube: fans tend to become somewhat fanatical.

What bothered me while following the Madeline Soto case was Gisela’s tendency to turn tragic, terrifying cases into snarky entertainment. In this particular case, the victim’s stepfather, who had known her since she was 7 or 8, groomed her so horrifically that it ultimately cost her life under tragic circumstances I won’t detail here. Yet, on Gisela’s channel, she often mocked or made light of moments during police interviews or phone calls with the suspect’s parents, interrupting crucial information with inappropriate snark.

Sure, the murderer is a peculiar individual—he likes toys, for example—but the story behind the case is far too tragic to be treated as "snark-friendly," no matter how ridiculous the perpetrator may seem. This is where I stopped following Gisela, as I felt she was trivializing serious matters and presenting herself as an "expert," frequently invited on Court TV. There are many other knowledgeable YouTubers covering this case, so why is it always her who gets the spotlight?

I’m not saying Gisela is unintelligent or never serious—she is indeed serious and does good work. However, her unnecessary snark often falls flat and can be quite off-putting. Many viewers appreciate it, saying it makes the content easier to watch, but in my opinion, these are harrowing cases, not light entertainment.

There has also been considerable discussion about Gisela allegedly taking paid information from other YouTubers—who pooled resources to access exclusive material on this case—and presenting it as her own. This has led creators like “Plunder” to add audio watermarks to their videos to prevent theft.

I can’t say for sure what goes on behind the scenes, but these issues contributed to my decision to stop following Gisela and instead watch creators like Plunder. Ultimately, I would recommend watching well-made documentaries, but since this is about YouTubers, that’s my take.
