Marie Dubuque - The original Youtuber since day 1

Let’s begin this blog with my first favorite of them all—the OG of YouTube, or at least one of them… Marie Dubuque. I think she started her earliest videos around 2011, so she’s been there from the very start. I listened to interviews with her in the past, and she said that she used to give her son unsolicited advice about his life in school with girls etc, and he got tired of it—so he suggested she start a YouTube channel to help people there instead. She did! And she’s been delivering ever since.

For those of you who don’t know, she’s someone who responds to people’s everyday struggles, usually revolving around all types of relationships, especially friendships and romantic ones. If you searched on YouTube for anything related to those topics, Marie was the one who always popped up—at least in the past (now YouTube is sadly bombarded with young "experts").

What I love about Marie is that she’s in fact older, but she was never afraid to start a YouTube channel. She’s had her own fair share of friendships that went south, so she knows what she’s talking about. She also had a podcast I used to listen to (sadly, she hasn’t updated it in years), but she shared common relationship issues there too—plus personal dilemmas and anecdotes. She writes books in the same field as well. I’ve never had the chance to read them, but I get the impression they’re just like her videos and podcast episodes—focused on relationships and how to communicate better.

I should also add that she’s a certified life coach. I don’t know how or where she got her certification, but that’s what she says she is. Marie Dubuque definitely does a lot. She has her own Amazon page where she reviews all kinds of things—jewelry, books, anything you can imagine—but she doesn’t really mention it on her YouTube channel.

If you search for “Marie Dubuque” and then go to the “Channels” tab on YouTube, you’ll see she has many channels—not just one, but plenty. Marie is both a private person and a public one, in a way. It’s hard to describe. She gives advice, but she doesn’t seem to go beyond that. She doesn’t offer classes, Patreon, or anything like that, like many others on YouTube do. I guess her Amazon reviews and whatever she earns from YouTube are enough for her.

To me, Marie is kind of an good enigma. She’s definitely a public figure and has appeared on other people’s podcasts, but, as I said, she’s not someone you can really reach. Not saying everyone has to be available in a private way, but what I mean is—it feels like what she’s doing on her channel is genuine and more like a hobby than a business. She could easily have created courses or offered sessions, which are so popular these days—but she hasn’t. She often responds to people’s comments and helps them directly there, and I think she seems like a very nice lady. All I wish is that she start posting new episodes on her podcast again.

The thing I personally think Marie Dubuque is bad at is her advice, 'nod and smile and walk away,' which she often gives for practically everything. No matter the situation, she usually believes that nodding, smiling, and avoiding it is the best approach. Unfortunately, this approach doesn't always work. It's not always a situation where you can just suddenly walk away—where would you go, for example? If someone questions your behavior, are you just supposed to smile? So, I'm a bit curious about how she’s handled more demanding situations in her life.

We don’t need more young people claiming they’re experts—we need older people like Marie. People who aren’t extreme vegans, raw meat eaters, extreme minimalism, Kardashians or talking to crystals and tarot cards. Just a normal midlife woman who gives advice to anyone who needs it.
